Gua Sha: An ancient tool for lasting beauty

What is Gua Sha?

You have likely already heard of Gua Sha, the latest beauty tool that has garnered great popularity around the world for improved skin health using ancient tools and techniques. Pronounced Gwah-Shah, the word comes from the Chinese language and means to “scrap or rub”.  Originally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this historical health tool has been modernized and is now widely utilized within natural skincare routines. Gua Sha tools of today are typically made of jade or rose quartz and are used to reduce puffiness and give a healthier, youthful glow to dull or aging skin. By massaging the Gua Sha tool in an swift, but gentle, upward, scraping motion you are able to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and reduce inflammation, resulting in a more contoured, lifted face.

Gua Sha at home

Using a Gua Sha tool is easy and safe and can be incorporated into your at home facial routine. However, if you are a first timer with Gua Sha it is recommend to have your first experience with a professional who can guide you to achieving maximum results at home. Once your ready for at home treatments, start off by finding a good Gua Sha tool that fits comfortably within your hand. We recommend starting with cleansed skin that is well hydrated. From there, apply a face oil or serum to allow the tool to glide across your skin and offer protection from any abrasion. Gently sweep the stone up the neck and work upwards and outwards toward the hairline, focusing on the cheekbones and jaw. These motions will guide fluid drainage downward and will promote good blood circulation. Remember to keep your movements gentle without applying too much pressure. Finish your treatment by placing a cloth on your face to keep it warm and a glass of room temperature (not cold) water to keep your skin hydrated.
